The August "book of the month" is a pair of hard-cover albums structures exploring two methods of making guards.
Guards are the inserted elements along the spine that allow for the inclusion of ephemera. This way the book will not bow out from the additions. Both will easily house inclusions like dried flowers, ticket stubs, tiny paintings, recipe cards, photographs, or postcards.
The mini-album will have an accordion type of spine which functions as the guards. The album will be sewn on decorative tapes made from book cloth, but a sturdy type of ribbon (ideally a jacquard woven type) could easily work.
The larger-size album will be made with free-standing guards. Each signature is guarded on each side with a strip of lightweight cover stock. This allows for a beautiful rainbow of choices for the guards.
The exposed sewing on the spine offers a grand array of decorative possibilities from both the guards and the thread choices.
The mini-album will be cloth-covered and the larger album will be covered in decorative Japanese paper.
Both albums will open flat.
The course will be offered at the Owen Sound Artist's Co-op Workshop located next door the Co-op (942 2nd Ave East Owen Sound) on Sunday, Aug 11th, 10 am to 5 pm. Call (519) 371-0479 to sign up! Spots are limited so sign up early!
