The plan with this workshop was to explore two structures that involve a woven type of connection between the pages and the cover and textblock.
What I like about both of this is they use very little adhesive, are sturdy enough (paper has its limitations folks) and have a logic to their construction that makes teaching them pretty straightforward.
The first structure is from Alisa Golden's marvellous book "Making Handmade Books" which is a treasure. I am on an one woman campaign to make sure more people buy that book!
The woven codex uses a ribbon to bind the pages together instead of thread. It's decorative and allows for a fun inclusion of a card, pocket, or frame element in the centre of each signature.

The second book is a book with a name that just trips off the tongue!
The Australian Reverse Piano Hinge Binding. Ta-da!
But I love to give credit where credit is due and it was invented by an Australian, Gwen Diehn!
The idea is that you weave a paper accordion through the signatures and use strips of paper to anchor the mountain fold inside the book.
What is ridiculously cool about this book is that you can remove the pages and then put them back in. If you don't glue in the piece of paper that anchors the page and instead do a bit of strategic weaving it will hold it without falling out, but you can still slide it free to remove the page and replace it.

Join the fun here in Owen Sound!
